I Missed It!

July 8th, 2006 2:26 pm

Odometer RolloverMy car’s odometer rolled over 100,000 the other day BUT I missed it. I was so excited to watch all 6 individual dials roll over from 9.

Considering I always have my camera in my pocket, I was planning on video taping the long awaited milestone. It was for the best because I probably would have hit a tree or rear ended a car. Boy, that sure would have made for a great video. I’d be Internet famous in an instant.

Now I have to wait until the next milestone…

Name that Floating Thing!

June 23rd, 2006 12:57 am

During lunch I have noticed an unusual wooden contraption floating in the river next to my office building. At first glance, it looks like a trebuchet but it doesn’t look like it has hinges or a counter weight.

I don’t want to swim out there just to figure out what it is so I leave it up to you Internet. Please don’t let me down.

It’s time to play: Name that Floating Thing!

Merlefest 2006

May 2nd, 2006 6:56 pm

I attended Merlefest 2006, and had an amazing time. As usual, I take pictures of everything I do so make sure to check them out.

Every year Merlefest is held in Wilksboro, North Carolina. This was my first time at Merlefest and I got to go backstage and rub elbows with all of the artists. It was 4 days and 4 nights of incredible music and great times. It was an excellent vacation, but now I’m tired from the long days and lack of sleep. I guess I need a vacation from my vacation :)

Mesothelioma and Me

March 26th, 2006 11:18 pm

Mesothelioma - Asbestos in BasementMesothelioma is a serious form of cancer that is related to asbestos exposure. Don’t worry, I don’t have mesothelioma and I don’t plan on getting it.

I had no idea what mesothelioma was until I bought a house with asbestos in the basement. My brother John works as a mesothelioma defense lawyer (among other things), and he told me all about the risks of asbestos exposure. Even though it looks tempting, never lick asbestos, unless that is, you want to get mesothelioma. And if you get mesothelioma, I recommend that you seek legal help from a mesothelioma lawyer.

This is the first time I’ve ever seen asbestos and it’s in my basement. When looking in the basement, my inspector pointed it out to me.

Uh Scott, I wouldn’t touch that if I were you.
 Why not?
Because that white covering is asbestos.
 Oh, that’s bad.

Yeah, asbestos is bad, but only if you rub it on your skin, inhale the little asbestos fibers, or consume it. Still, I don’t want to get mesothelioma so I want the asbestos out of my house as soon as possible. Currently the asbestos is covering the wooden support beam above my furnace. It will protect the beam in case of a fire, and it was installed there for that very reason.

A house jack is pinning the asbestos to the support beam so it will need to be moved. I plan to safely remove the asbestos when I replace the columns in the basement. There are a few more house jacks and old tree trunks loosely holding up my house… but that’s another story.

Real Snow Attacks Fake Snow

December 9th, 2005 8:15 pm

Real Snow Attacks Fake SnowYou may have seen these fake snow domes popping up on your neighbors lawn this holiday season. They whirl around fake snow within the plastic dome to give the impression of a delightful winter wonderland.

I found it funny that real snow was covering this fake snow dome. Is that ironic? Just plain silly?

Transplanting Maples and Growing Roses

June 6th, 2005 9:26 pm

I’ve been working on my house lately and one of the things that I have enjoyed lately is landscaping.

This past weekend I transplanted an eight foot maple tree from the side of my house to the back perimeter. The picture you see is of the maple tree the following day. It doesn’t look too healthy at the moment but I think it will do just fine. The recent rain will help.

While removing some weeds I spotted a rose bush that had just started blossoming. One rose bud looked so perfect with the rain drops on its petals. I used a wire support to string the rose branches (and thorns :) ) upwards.

I also laid down a lot of red cedar multch in between the grass and the house. The grass seed that I had been sprinkling around has come up like astro turf. I am very pleased with my landscaping efforts.
