In order to avoid turning it on myself, I had to update the BIOS of my digital picture frame laptop with a floppy disk. Thanks to my friend Kevin for loaning me his external floppy drive.
I installed the BIOS update on a floppy and booted up the laptop. All seemed well until I got this message:
“This process requires a charged battery to avoid an accidental power-off during an update. Turn off the computer and install a charged battery in the computer.”
Before I glued the LCD screen to the back of the laptop, I removed the battery to save on weight. Now I have absolutely no access to the battery compartment.
At the moment, I see no way to have the computer turn itself on at scheduled times unless it can properly hibernate from Windows XP. It can’t hibernate because the BIOS doesn’t support windows XP, and I can’t update the BIOS because I removed the battery.
Maybe I can hack the BIOS update to make it think the battery is installed. Hmmm, stay tuned…

Dude, that sucks.
Can you see the battery leads at all from the back? It’s a longshot, but maybe you can hook up a battery via wires to the leads?
Actually, from looking at the pictures again, I think you’re screwed.

I found this which someone else had luck updating the bios on a ibm Thinkpad 600 model without the battery.

Well, I followed the instructions at that link and it did not work unfortunately.
I also found this link that warns it might brick my laptop, and that it is basically impossible even if I were to get access to the battery leads:

As a mental note, I have BIOS version ITET48WW.

Never mind, I figured it out!
In case this is helpful for anyone else. This was the error message I was getting: “The FOL function is not enabled.”
If you hold F1 when the laptop is booting up and enter the BIOS menu, under Config -> Network, Enable the Flash option.
Then repeat the steps to update your BIOs, and voila! Updated BIOS!
